Framework: Technology Adoption
The e-Learn Framework: Technology Adoption is built upon a foundation that addresses the Why, What and How we envisaged to use ICT in support of curriculum delivery.
Why do we use ICT? Teachers need to teach but are challenged, because of their limited reach and access. The sum total of what the teacher needs to do, equals an impossible task. Without the necessary support to teachers, teaching is delivered ineffectively and inefficiently. Information and Communication Technologies are best suited to support teaching and learning as its intended design is to afford the user to work smarter and faster. We will thus use ICT as an enabler of effective and efficient delivery of 21st Century teaching and learning.
What is ICT? Information and Communication Technology is not a pedagogy, it is just a tool.
How will we use it? We will use ICT as an integrated tool combined with the best of pedagogy. When teachers integrate the tools in this way, they will be afforded with the potential to deliver those challenging aspects of curriculum delivery, efficiently and effectively. This is best achieved when the tools are simple and easy to use.
Built onto this foundation is a framework of technology driven by teaching needs and challenges. The technology consists of e-Learning Systems, tools and devices that are connected to an enabling backbone. The backbone ensures that every school is connected to the Provincial Wide Area Network (PWAN) and every classroom is connected via a Local Area Network (LAN). Teachers will choose the appropriate tools to deliver content, assess and give feedback, find and share resources, communicate and interact, collaborate and co-create. The smarter and faster deliverance of these teaching needs and challenges will necessitate a transformation of the learning elements.
The teachers potential reach and access is now extended to such an extent that the learning environment is available 24/7/365. Teachers are also afforded with golden opportunities to transform from a teacher centered to a student centered role. The time gained with the faster transfer of content, feedback and communication allows for more time spent on higher order levels of thinking such as understanding, application, evaluation and co-creation of knowledge. Integrating ICT's in this way will ensure the realization of the 21st Century classroom. Successful ICT Integration will be activated via the sweet spot i.e the overlapping expertise of the Senior Curriculum Planners, Subject Advisors, e-Learn Advisors and Teachers. These role players will apply their expertise in the context of the needs and challenges faced within the classroom.
The successful adoption of technology by all role players is dependent on the following tipping points: a shared vision, planning, continuous professional development, resources, e-Content, systemic and systematic modelling and a sustainable budget. Refer to: Framework: Technology Adoption
